ST. JUDE’S ACADEMY LOUNGE MURAL PROJECT

 

This mural was created for the lounge area of St. Jude’s Academy, a private high school. The goal was to transform the space into a more welcoming and visually appealing environment that fosters a sense of school spirit and pride. The design, developed by the school, features vibrant school colors, bold geometric lines, and a powerful message: “Become Unstoppable” accompanied by their mascot, a leaping deer.

Inspiration & Concept Development

St. Jude’s Academy wanted to create a uniform look that tied into the existing color palette and aesthetic of the school. The school’s design team crafted a vibrant yet elegant concept with sharp, dynamic lines that evoke energy and movement—perfect for a lounge space where students gather. The use of the school mascot, the deer, alongside the motivational message adds a personal and empowering touch, reinforcing the school’s values and spirit.

Challenges & Solutions

Working on this project required precision, especially when handling the fine, sharp points of the geometric shapes and the outlined lettering. We used a paint mask vinyl to ensure clean edges and bled every tape line before applying the required colors. This technique minimizes paint bleed and ensures sharp, clean lines. Despite our careful preparation, some touch-ups were necessary, requiring patience and attention to detail.

Another challenge was creating the stencil off-site, which took an entire day. Ensuring the stencil aligned perfectly with the design on-site required meticulous measurement and planning.

Techniques & Materials

  • Paint Mask Vinyl: Used to create clean, precise edges for both the lettering and geometric shapes.
  • Tape Bleeding Technique: Applied to prevent paint bleed under the tape lines, resulting in sharper edges.
  • High-Quality Latex Paint: Chosen for its durability and vibrant finish.
  • Patience & Precision: Essential for both the touch-up process and aligning the stencil perfectly.

Impact & Feedback

The completed mural significantly transformed the lounge, making it more vibrant, inviting, and commanding. The bold design and powerful message give the space a sense of energy and purpose, creating a motivating environment for students. The school was highly satisfied with the final result, noting how it added character and identity to the space.

Timeframe & Scale

The project took 5 days to complete on-site, plus an additional day off-site to create the stencil. The mural covers a large section of the lounge, making it a central feature of the room.
