HOUSE OF ANANSI PRESS
House of Anansi Press, a well-known independent bookstore and publisher, wanted to enhance the exterior of their building by painting their name and a description of their offerings directly onto the brick façade. This project combined modern branding with a respect for the building’s historical aesthetic.
The bookstore specifically requested a font style that matched the faded, vintage signage we had previously restored on the same building. This created a seamless blend between past and present, maintaining the character of the space while adding a fresh, bold statement.
Process & Techniques:
- A vinyl stencil was used to ensure sharp, clean lettering.
- We first applied a primer coat to help the paint adhere to the brick and ensure longevity.
- Multiple top coats of paint were carefully applied to create a bold and durable finish that would withstand the elements.
- Ladders, including a small A-frame ladder, were used to access the signage above the entrance and along the side of the building.
- The project also involved cutting and preparing the vinyl stencils in advance, which took a few hours before installation.
The entire painting process was completed in one day, with the stencil preparation taking additional time beforehand. The end result was a refined, professional look that not only marked the storefront clearly but also paid homage to the historic hand-painted signage that once adorned the building.
