BIOSPHERE SPACE EXHIBIT MURAL

This mural, inspired by the iconic Apollo 11 moment of Earth rising over the lunar surface, was commissioned by the Biosphere Museum in Montreal for their space exhibit. Situated at the entrance, the mural greets visitors with a sense of awe and wonder, setting the tone for the immersive experience inside.

Inspiration & Concept Development

The museum’s vision was to capture one of humanity’s most defining moments—the view of Earth from the Moon. This image not only represents the exploration of space but also underscores the fragility and interconnectedness of our planet. The mural’s scale and detail were designed to evoke the same profound emotions felt during the Apollo 11 mission.

Techniques & Materials

Projection and Layout: The design was projected onto the wall to ensure accuracy in scale and proportion.

Brush and Spray Techniques:

  • The foundational shapes and forms were painted using brushes.
  • An HVLP spray gun was employed for blending and fine details, creating a realistic and smooth gradient effect for the Earth and lunar surface.

Protective Measures: A large makeshift spray booth was constructed using plastic sheeting to prevent overspray from affecting nearby areas, ensuring a clean and controlled application.

Access Equipment: A skyjack was used to safely reach the upper portions of the mural, as the wall stood over 20 feet tall.

Challenges & Solutions

Height and Access: Working at such a height required precise coordination and safety measures. The use of a skyjack allowed us to work efficiently and securely.

Spray Booth Construction: Containing overspray was critical in the indoor environment. Building a temporary spray booth ensured that the surrounding space remained pristine while allowing for seamless blending techniques.

Detail Work: Capturing the intricate details of the Earth and the rugged texture of the lunar surface demanded patience and precision, which were achieved through layering and gradual refinement.

Impact & Feedback

The completed mural transformed the entrance into a captivating visual experience, immediately immersing visitors in the themes of exploration and connection. The museum staff expressed their delight with the final piece, noting its ability to inspire awe and curiosity in their guests.

Timeframe & Scale

The project took one week to complete, with careful planning and execution ensuring that every detail of the mural resonated with the museum’s mission and vision.

This project was an honor to work on, blending art and history to celebrate one of humanity’s greatest achievements.
