DUNDAS MUSIC STUDIO – VOLTAIRE QUOTE MURAL

📍 Location: Back entrance & parking area of Dundas Music Studio
🎨 Objective: To add a creative and thought-provoking element to the space with a whimsical quote reflecting the spirit of music.

Project Overview:

  • The client wanted a clever and artistic sign to decorate the back of their music studio, choosing a quote from Voltaire:
“Anything too stupid to be spoken is sung.”
  • The goal was to create a simple yet impactful mural that would engage visitors and musicians while complementing the studio’s creative atmosphere.

Challenges & Process:

  • Corrugated Surface:
    • The mural was painted on horizontally corrugated metal siding, making it much more complex than typical vertical corrugated surfaces.
    • Each letter had to be applied individually instead of a smooth left-to-right stencil application.
  • Stencil Application & Painting:
    • Vinyl stencils were carefully applied one letter at a time due to the ridges.
    • Spray paint was used to ensure clean, crisp lines and speed up the process.
  • Height & Equipment:
    • The mural was painted 20 feet high, requiring multiple ladders for access.
    • Two painters worked simultaneously to complete the project efficiently.

Final Result:

✅ Completed in one day despite the challenging surface.
✅ Achieved a bold, crisp, and visually striking result.
✅ The quote now serves as a conversation piece that highlights the creative energy of the studio.

This music studio wanted to add a creative and thought-provoking touch to its back entrance and parking area by featuring a clever quote from Voltaire: “Anything too stupid to be spoken is sung.” The quote playfully reflects the spirit of the studio, celebrating music as a powerful and expressive art form.

This project presented a unique challenge due to the surface material. The mural was painted on horizontally corrugated metal siding, which made the application of the vinyl stencil significantly more complex. Unlike standard vertical corrugated surfaces, which allow for a single, smooth stencil application from left to right, this required each letter to be applied individually due to the ridges running horizontally. This added an extra layer of precision and time to the process.

To ensure the cleanest and sharpest lines possible, we opted for spray paint application, which helped to speed up the process while maintaining a crisp finish. Given the mural’s height—approximately 20 feet at its tallest point—multiple ladders were used so that two painters could work simultaneously.

Despite the challenges, the sign was completed within a single day, adding a bold and visually striking element to the studio’s exterior. The end result is a simple yet effective mural that catches the eye and sparks conversation, reinforcing the creative energy of the space.
