A&C BOEHMER LIMITED – HAND-PAINTED FAUX VINTAGE WINDOW SIGN

This project was a deep dive into the art of vintage sign painting, blending historical authenticity with modern execution. The client wanted to replicate the charm of an aged storefront sign for A&C Boehmer Limited – Paper Boxes, ensuring it felt like a genuine relic from the past. The result was a hand-crafted, faux-aged sign painted directly onto a glass window, designed to be installed as part of a restoration project.

The Art of Vintage Sign Painting

Before the era of mass-produced vinyl signs and digital printing, hand-painted signage was the backbone of storefront branding. Skilled signwriters would carefully craft lettering using enamels, gold leaf, and specialist brushes, with each sign serving as a unique piece of functional art. Over decades, exposure to the elements led to natural distressing, with the paint chipping, fading, and cracking to create the authentic “ghost sign” aesthetic.

For this project, we aimed to recreate that aged, timeworn feel using a blend of traditional techniques and modern efficiency, ensuring a historically accurate yet cost-effective solution.

Project Process & Techniques Used

  • Custom Layout & Design:
Since the sign needed to fit into a curved window frame, we carefully adjusted the typography and composition, ensuring the design worked harmoniously with the glass shape.

  • Paint Mask Stencil Application:
To maintain precision while keeping the project efficient and budget-conscious, we hand-cut custom paint mask stencils for the lettering. This method allowed for clean, crisp lines, ensuring accuracy and reducing the need for extensive freehand work while still maintaining a hand-painted aesthetic.

  • Hand-Painted Touch-Ups & Refinements:
Once the stencils were applied, we carefully hand-painted over them, layering high-quality signwriting enamel to build depth and opacity. This process ensured that the letters had the bold, striking presence typical of early 20th-century storefront signs.

  • Aging & Distressing Techniques:
To achieve the authentic vintage look, we used a variety of faux-aging techniques, including:

    • Chipping & Flaking: After the paint was fully cured, we carefully distressed sections to replicate the peeling effect of aged signage.
    • Abrasion & Wear: By using steel wool, fine sandpaper, and controlled scraping, we introduced realistic fading to mimic years of exposure.
    • Ghosting & Sun Damage Effects: Some areas were strategically lightened to create the illusion of uneven wear due to sunlight and weathering.
    • Streaking & Grime Buildup: A mix of thin washes and dry brushing was applied to introduce subtle stains and natural patina.
  • Final Touches & Preservation:
After achieving the desired level of aging, we sealed the sign to ensure durability before it was reinstalled into its wooden frame.

Blending the Old with the New

This project was a celebration of classic signwriting techniques adapted for modern efficiency. By integrating hand-cut paint mask stencils with freehand refinements, we balanced historical accuracy with practical execution, ensuring both quality and cost-effectiveness.

As vintage-style branding and ghost sign restorations gain popularity, this approach allows businesses to recapture the authentic character of hand-painted signs while keeping production time and costs in check. The final result is a convincing, beautifully aged piece that feels like it has stood the test of time.

This was a truly rewarding project that allowed us to preserve the legacy of traditional sign craftsmanship while bringing a piece of Toronto’s visual history back to life.
