HARBOURFRONT WHIMSICAL CIRCLES MURAL

Inspiration and Concept
The Harbourfront project was initiated as a creative transformation of the old skating rink floor, which was slated to be demolished and converted into a new skating rink. For the summer, the Harbourfront aimed to create a lively, whimsical space where visitors could enjoy the waterfront. A talented artist designed a series of vibrant and playful circular patterns, intended to delight and engage visitors with their unique, dynamic aesthetics.

Techniques and Materials
To ensure the circular designs were accurate and symmetrical, the team used string anchored at the center of each circle to create perfect outlines. Various rollers, ranging from large to tiny, were utilized to paint the circles and achieve different textures and patterns.

The outdoor nature of the project posed a challenge due to weather conditions, particularly rain. Pooled water delayed painting, prompting the team to employ large floor squeegees and even vacuum water to expedite drying and resume work. These efforts ensured minimal disruption to the timeline.

Process and Execution
The team collaborated to execute the design over two weeks. The expansive area required meticulous measurement and teamwork to achieve the vibrant patterns across the entire floor. Despite the logistical hurdles posed by the weather, the project was completed successfully, providing a colorful, inviting space for the Harbourfront visitors.

Impact and Reception
The final mural transformed the former rink into a stunning and engaging public artwork. The lively colors and patterns added a joyful energy to the waterfront, enhancing the visitor experience and making the space a temporary landmark for the season. This project highlighted the potential of temporary art to bring vibrancy and functionality to urban spaces.
