TRADITIONAL CHINESE DINING MURAL

For this project, the client wanted a hand-painted line drawing capturing the essence of traditional and ancient Chinese communal dining customs. The artwork needed to complement the restaurant’s cultural ambiance while seamlessly integrating with the space’s architectural layout.

The design effectively illustrates two distinct dining scenes that showcase historical and modern perspectives on Chinese dining traditions.

THE MAIN HALLWAY MURAL

The first mural, prominently displayed in the restaurant’s main hallway, portrays a historical gathering scene. The artwork features a group of four individuals sitting around an open fire, preparing and sharing a meal. In the background, a solitary figure can be seen on a boat, perhaps fishing or traveling along a river, reinforcing the connection between food, nature, and tradition.

This placement was particularly strategic, as the mural is located directly outside a large private dining room, which accommodates parties of 15+ people. This makes the artwork feel like a dedicated piece of cultural storytelling for guests dining in that space, while still being visible from many vantage points throughout the restaurant.

THE SECOND MURAL – A MODERN TWIST

Further into the restaurant, leading toward the bathroom corridor, is a second mural. Unlike the first design, this piece depicts a more contemporary dining scene. The artwork illustrates two men sitting at a simple wooden table and bench, enjoying their meal together. This mural serves as a bridge between the past and present, offering a visual narrative on how communal dining customs have evolved while remaining an integral part of Chinese culture.

TECHNICAL PROCESS & EXECUTION

To maintain the delicate, hand-drawn quality of the line art, we employed a Mas Tac vinyl paint mask, a specialty stencil material that ensures clean and crisp lines when working with paint. The process included:

• Applying a “bleed coat”—a base layer of paint that matches the wall color—to fill any potential gaps left by the stencil. This ensures that the final black line work is razor-sharp with no unwanted paint seepage.
• Using premium-grade paint for long-lasting durability and rich contrast against the restaurant’s deep red walls.
• Manually refining the fine details after stencil removal to enhance the artwork’s precision.

The approach we used is a technique often employed in large-scale mural painting, particularly when intricate designs or historical references are involved. The careful execution allowed the final artwork to blend seamlessly with the environment while maintaining the authenticity of the hand-drawn aesthetic. CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

One of the project’s logistical challenges was the limited clearance space in the narrow hallway, which made projecting the design impractical. Instead, stencils were the preferred method, allowing us to accurately transfer the artwork onto the wall without distortion.

Additionally, since this was an active restaurant, all work was scheduled during off-hours to minimize disruptions for customers and staff. A lockbox system allowed us easy access to the space, a common practice for large-scale commercial projects where multiple teams may need entry at different times.
