IPAD (ON THE ROAD) – MURAL

LARGE-SCALE HAND-PAINTED ADVERTISEMENT FOR APPLE

📍 254 Adelaide Street West, Toronto, ON

This massive 30-foot by 30-foot mural was created as part of Apple’s iPad campaign, emphasizing the on-the-go functionality of the device. The artwork highlights the iPad’s ability to organize travel experiences, providing tools like weather updates, date tracking, and digital photo albums.

Set against Toronto’s bustling downtown, this high-visibility advertisement aimed to captivate pedestrians and commuters, seamlessly blending hyper-realistic imagery with Apple’s clean, modern aesthetic.

DESIGN PROCESS & TECHNIQUES

  • Projection & Layout: Given the large scale of this mural, a digital projector was used to accurately transfer the intricate design onto the wall. To achieve this, we had to set up the projector at a significant distance from the wall to ensure the entire image was visible at once.

  • Initial Tracing: The foundational outlines were traced using spray paint instead of traditional pencils. Spray paint allows for faster application on large walls and remains visible even when viewed from high up on a lift. The tracing process required precise positioning, ensuring that every element of the iPad screen aligned perfectly with the real-world perspective.

  • Fine Detail Work: This mural included several challenging elements, requiring a combination of freehand painting, masking techniques, and stencils to create depth and realism:

    • Plaid Shirt on the Biker: The plaid pattern on the motorcyclist’s shirt was one of the most intricate parts of the mural. To achieve the sharp, evenly spaced lines, we applied quarter-inch masking tape in a precise crisscross pattern. After carefully painting between the taped areas, the tape was removed to reveal a perfectly symmetrical plaid effect.
    • iPad’s Background Pattern: The iPad screen features a subtle wishbone pattern in the background. Rather than freehanding this delicate detail, we used a reusable stencil. The challenge with this technique is that stencils can quickly become saturated with paint, requiring frequent cleaning and careful application to avoid smudging.
  • Perspective & Optical Illusions: A unique challenge in rendering this mural was the distorted perspective caused by painting up-close on a massive wall. When viewed from a few feet away, elements of the design might appear stretched or misaligned, making it crucial to trust the original reference image. This is where checking from a distance and adjusting accordingly became an essential part of the process.

  • Skyjack & Mobility: The entire mural was painted using a skyjack lift, which provided a stable working platform that could be repositioned as needed. The mobility of the lift was critical, allowing us to access high areas smoothly and ensuring that brush strokes and spray applications remained even and consistent across the vast surface.

MURAL IMPACT & BRAND REPRESENTATION

This mural was not only a testament to Apple’s minimalist yet engaging branding, but also a prime example of large-scale hand-painted advertising. The finished artwork seamlessly blended photorealistic details, digital precision, and traditional hand-painting techniques to create a striking visual statement in one of Toronto’s busiest districts.
