KOREA TOWN MURAL
Inspiration and Concept
The Korea Town Mural, commissioned by the Korea Tourism Board, was designed to celebrate and highlight the beauty and culture of Korea. Painted on the exterior wall of the PAT Central grocery store in Toronto’s Korea Town, the mural showcases Korea’s stunning landmarks and cultural heritage. The concept was to transport viewers to Korea’s iconic destinations while celebrating the vibrant local Korean-Canadian community.
Techniques and Materials
- Design Adaptation: The original design was simplified to match the project’s budget and timeline while retaining its vibrant and impactful visual appeal. Posterized and graphic styles were used to streamline the painting process.
- Access: The mural spanned 25 feet in height and 100 feet in length, requiring the use of a large outdoor skyjack to access the wall safely and efficiently.
- Painting Process:
- Images were projected onto the wall for accuracy.
- A skyjack was outfitted with a mixing station to facilitate on-site color mixing and reduce physical strain.
- Stencils were used for smaller characters and birds, followed by blending and touch-ups for a polished finish.
- Many colors were custom-mixed on-site to achieve the desired vibrancy.
- Materials: High-quality exterior paints were used to ensure durability and color retention over time.
Challenges and Solutions
- Large Scale: The expansive size of the wall required meticulous planning and team coordination. The use of a skyjack and on-site mixing stations helped optimize workflow.
- Complex Imagery: By simplifying detailed elements into graphic styles, the team maintained the essence of the design while ensuring timely completion.
- Community Engagement: The mural needed to resonate with the local community and visitors alike, which was achieved through close collaboration with the Korea Tourism Board.
