OAKVILLE HARDWARE STORE – HISTORIC SIGN RESTORATION
Project Overview:
This historic hardware store in Toronto was being transformed into a restaurant while retaining its original name and signage as part of its branding. The challenge was to restore the original sign without compromising its authenticity, as the new owners wanted to preserve the character and history of the space.
Process & Techniques:
- The existing sign was in poor condition, with much of the original lettering faded and weathered. However, enough remained to serve as a guide for the restoration.
- Minimal surface prep was done to avoid erasing the historic lettering. Typically, a project like this would involve sanding, priming, and repainting from scratch, but that wasn’t an option here.
- We carefully hand-painted the lettering, reviving the bold, crisp typography while maintaining the aged aesthetic of the sign.
- A ladder was used for access instead of a boom lift, which was initially considered but deemed unnecessary for the project size.
Challenges & Solutions:
- Balancing restoration with preservation—ensuring the sign looked vibrant while still respecting its original weathered charm.
- Limited ability to prep the surface required careful brushwork to blend the restoration seamlessly into the existing layers of paint.
- Outdoor conditions meant working efficiently to complete the project in a timely manner before exposure to weather affected the paint application.
The final result was a revitalized yet historically accurate storefront sign that helped establish the restaurant’s unique identity while paying homage to the past. This project was a great example of how signage restoration can bridge history and modern branding in a thoughtful and visually compelling way.
