TD BANK PRIDE BENCHES PROJECT

 

We were contracted by a production company to assist with a project for TD Bank at the Toronto Dominion Centre. The goal was to create a large, heart-shaped bench painted with vibrant LGBTQ2+ colors in celebration of Pride Month. The installation was placed outdoors in the Dominion Centre, serving as both a functional seating area and a striking piece of public art.

Inspiration & Concept Development

The inspiration for this project was to celebrate diversity and inclusion through a bold, colorful design that would stand out in the heart of downtown Toronto. The production company provided the concept, and we worked closely with them to bring it to life. The heart shape of the bench symbolized love and unity, while the use of the LGBTQ2+ rainbow colors created a visually striking and meaningful display.

Challenges & Solutions

One of the key challenges was ensuring that all the shapes and colors lined up perfectly across the curved and angled surfaces of the benches. Taping out the design was particularly difficult due to the complex geometry of the heart shape. To overcome this, we carefully measured and marked out the layout before taping and painting each section.

Additionally, the project was an extreme rush job, requiring us to work long hours over a single weekend with a team of assistants. Despite the tight timeline, we managed to complete the project on schedule, thanks to efficient teamwork and meticulous attention to detail.

Techniques & Materials

  • Priming: The benches were primed to ensure a smooth surface for painting and better paint adhesion.
  • Layout & Taping: The design was carefully drawn and taped out to create clean, sharp lines for each color.
  • High-Quality Exterior Paint: Chosen for its durability and vibrancy to withstand outdoor conditions.

Impact & Feedback

The finished product looked fantastic, especially when viewed in the bright downtown sun. The colorful benches quickly became a popular spot for people to sit, relax, and enjoy the vibrant artwork. Seeing people interacting with and appreciating the benches was incredibly rewarding. TD Bank and the production company were very pleased with the final result.

This project was completed over a single weekend, requiring long hours and a dedicated team to meet the tight deadline. The large heart-shaped bench installation became a prominent feature in the Toronto Dominion Centre during Pride Month.
